How To Purchase Certified EVOO

By Phyllis Schroeder

It is not easy to find the right brand of olive oil in supermarkets today. Many claim to be certified EVOO when they are not, which can cause a person to believe they are buying the real thing. To assist with making the right decision, here is a look at a few ways in which a person can make the right decision.

The date on a bottle of olive oil should be checked to see how long it will last. Some brands do not have dates on them which is a sign that they might not be genuine. Some might say that the date is not important, but one has to remember that olive is quite perishable and should be used up in a few months if one wants to maintain freshness.

It is also good if the date the oil was prepared and packaged is also on the bottle. This will show the consumer how much time they have to use the product before it gets rancid. There are a number of things that affect the longevity of the oil like contact with air, the color of the bottle, and where it is stored so these should also be taken into consideration.

The right price of the oil is also an issue in terms of getting the right quality. Many people look at the high priced oils because of the value that has been placed on cooking with olive oil. So some would assume that the higher the price the better it is. Yet, this is not the best way to evaluate the quality of an oil.

If a brand of oil stays on the shelf for too long, the quality becomes less over time. The most important thing to look for is the certification that the oil is genuine. This could be done by looking for a seal of approval from an organization that tests the oils, or for an ingredients list that shows the type of olives that have been used to make the oil.

One should also consider looking at research into the type of oils that are real and who is doing the research. There are many companies all over the world who are competing against each other, but not all of them produce genuine olive oil. When research is done, it is usually funded in part by a company that is trying to validate their business.

It is important to understand the competition that is out there so that one can make their own decisions on what is right for them. There are organizations that assist in this process by testing olive oils to make sure that they are genuine. By placing their seal of approval on various brands, one can be sure that they are not wasting their money.

One should also consider the fact that just because olive oil was bottled in a country that is known for its olives, it does not mean that it is genuine. This is why tests are conducted to help consumers know which olive oil brands are the best. If a brand has been bought that one is not sure about, they can check with a reputable organization to know if they can trust the brand.
